Cell Phone Safe!
- Protect yourself and your digital information!
- Phones are great for documenting and communicating, but can be used to track you just by having them ON (cellphone towers). You might want to leave it at home — your life is on that phone.
- If you are going to carry one, use a signal blocking pouch.
- Make a free signal blocking pouch during digital audit office hours:
- Use at LEAST at 6 digit pin code on your phone, better to use 8-12 characters
- Do NOT use a finger print unlock.
- Make sure your phone uses encryption.
- Encrypt your messages! Use Signal App instead of txt messaging.
- Carry a cheap pay as you go phone instead of your main phone.
- Do not give out your password or give anyone permission to unlock your device.
- Plan a pre-arranged call with your buddy after an event.
On 4/30/2016 we hosted Aram Bartholl and Nadja Buttendorf at Machine Project for Kill Your Phone and Cryptonails. Participants worked with Aram to sew their own custom signal blocking phone pouches, while Nadja offered magnetic manicures to blank hard drives and credit cards with ease.
On 5/29/2015 we brought the Cryptotrailer to Machine Project for a workshop on the basics of PGP email encryption, using the initial communications of Edward Snowden and Laura Poitras as our model. Through group role-play we review how Snowden and Poitras securely established technical trust and began communications. We learn to anonymously make initial contact with a source, verify the security of an encrypted message, and learn some tips for maintaining secure communications over time.
We held office hours at Crash Space in Culver City on March 8, 2015, with six stations headed by different professors offering a range of things to learn. from radio frequency hacking, navigating the dark web, keyrings, toy hacking, to private virtual realities.
